Re: Journey, Path and Experience

Our life has been drastically altered by Epilepsy.  My son was in a serious car accident two years ago and acquired severe head trauma which lead to Epilepsy.  We were all prepared to lose him but he continued to fight through that first night and then through a two week long coma and he is still fighting, and there are more and more days that we think he will win the fight.

Epilepsy has taken us down roads we never wished to travel but while traveling down those roads we discovered so many things we may never have discovered.  Some of the things we, as a family, discovered is that my twin boys whom challenge the best of us with their energy and hyperactivity can pull it together to be some of the most responsible teenagers I have ever come across.  They have grown strong and mature (granted the maturity only lasts as long as their attention span).  We have learned who our friends are and who we can and cannot rely on.  Tragedy can bring the strongest people to their knees, and we have seen that, but we have also seen the weakest raise to meet the challenge.  I have become closer with my boys and taken the help from my Father and brothers.  We have also learned that you can pick the pieces up and begin again, as many times as needed.  After all, Rome was not built in a day.
I often think about how things would be if Epilepsy had not become apart of our family.  I think I would be working many long hours, and not spending nearly enough time at home, I would not appreciate the simpler things in life, as I do now.  My oldest son would probably have drifted from us the way many people do when they marry and have their own families.  If we had not been challenged with this, I firmly believe that the twins would have partied their way through high school only attending classes enough to keep teachers happy.  They would most likely be out every night, breaking curfew and causing chaos.  They'd go to college on water ski scholarships and water ski and party their way to graduation.  I don't even want to imagine what sort of trouble they'd be getting into with girls.  However, Epilepsy is apart of our family and I feel I know my children better than I ever would have, I know where they are and they come home at night, and often join me in watching movies on Saturday night.  I know that they are both unhappy with the way their life is going, but I've been told that no matter how their life was going, they would be unhappy simply because they are at that age.

I can't say that I am happy that we have to deal with Epilepsy and I can easily say that I wish and pray for it to disappear, but I can say that without it, I don't think I would know my children and I would not have learned to appreciate life everyday.

Re: Journey, Path and Experience

   Marissa,

You and your family have a very inspirational journey with Epilepsy, and I am very honored that you shared your story with us. When people reach out, and share the roads that they have been down, and the lessons that were learned, many other people end up reaching out as well and learning from them in the process.

It is wonderful how your father is helping you in the time that you need it the most. Sticking together, staying strong, and moving forward even when their is a set back is a wonderful formula for team work. You definitely described team work amongst you and your family.

If anyone has a similar story, or would like to introduce themself to Marissa please post within the forum. Sharing your journeys with one another is a great way to have a support when needed, and make a friend that may have similar experiences as you.

Re: Journey, Path and Experience

My path with seizures has been going on for a while. I started having them in the 8th grade, i was 13 now i'm 26.  I believe i was having small ones before that but i'm not sure.  My first experience was in my 8th grade english class. I passed out and fell out of my desk. The classed laughed and i didn't know what happened. I went to the nurse and she told me i wasn't eating right and needed to pay attention to what i was eating.  My mother and i believed it was something different. However, I didn't have another major seizure until i was in 9th grade. Then i passed out and hit a cinder block wall with my forehead in school. All i have to say is "ouch." After that i had them on and off and the doctors had no idea what was wrong with me. They said i had seizures however they didn't know the cause. I had all kinds of test: EEGs, EKGs, 24hr EEGs, 24hr EKGs, and MRI's. In the beginning of 12th grade i stopped having "Episodes."  I was slowly removed from my meds over an 8 week period and i didn't have any seizures.  I went 3 years with out any problems. They started again when i was working as a waiter and have irregular sleeping patterns. I once again had to see the doctors. They got me on meds and i had a sleep test and finally found out that I have "Complex Partial Seizures."  So i take meds daily and see my doctor twice a year.  I don't let this get me down. I have had points where i was emotional and pissed off since i didn't know what was wrong with me. I was lucky enough to have some great friends that were excepting of these issues. I haven't let my disorder hold me back. I've got to: drive, finish college, have a career, hike, mountain bike, hunt, fish, participate in 17years of soccer, and a 1.5 years of Martial arts (full contact). I still have many things to accomplish and i don't think twice about what i can't do. I guess thats my path, journey, and story, however it isn't finished yet. There are many more pages to be written.

Re: Journey, Path and Experience

 Tim,

Thank you for sharing your journey with Epilepsy on the forum. It's uplifting and encouraging to hear that you are now driving , have finished college, have a career, hunt, fish, hike, and more. Despite the travel you have had, you did not  let it get in your way when it came to education, exercise, and the work you love to do. You are very positive towards this cause and I love hearing stories such as this.   It helps many people, that may be going through a rough patch, to keep going to get back to where they were or where they want to be.

It was great having you join in the Tuesday night live chats with us this previous Tuesday. We hope to see you back next Tuesday.
