Effects of Medications

One of the post by Terri was stated one of the biggest problems is the side effects of Meds.  I have to say I've experienced a few things in this department.  I find the irorny that some of the side effects i have from siezures are the same as the Meds, go figure. I've learned to check out the side effects of the meds you take. I search them online. I search the websites to find out what the possible side effects of these meds could be. I currently take two. the side effects for these can be drowsiness, dizziness and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Those arn't too bad after i got used to them. When i first started on it, it kicked my butt. I could have a full night of sleep and I was still tired. I started on one med which there was a 1% chance of mood swings and i happened to be in that 1% group. My moods flipped like a switch and my doctor removed me very fast after i told him. So i've learned to look into what i'm taking and watch for the side effects. I'm currently on one med to prevent the seizures and if it fails i take another which contains the seizure from spreading.

So my suggestion is Ask your doctor questions, and look up the possible side effects and remember that not everyone is going to have the same effect to one med as another person has. If anyone else has information to add or experiences to share please do.

Re: Effects of Medications

We have had a horrendous time with my son's medications.  We have tried so many different combinations its hard to keep track of what worked and what didn't.  I do keep a journal to refer back to but it has been so complicated.  Some of the medication has caused him to loose a significant amount of weight, and when you don't weigh very much to begin with, weight loss is a concerning thing.  To correct this, they put him on something that would cause him to gain weight but that caused other problems.  He finds a lot of them make him disoriented and lethargic.  One or two combinations seemed to work great with the seizures but they caused problems with his ADHD.  Some doctors say go off the ADHD medication some say stay on it.  It has all been a nightmare!  I will be happy when we find something that works on a regular basis.

With the ADHD some times you have to eliminate meds to figure out whats working and whats hurting. So as a temp thing elimination certain meds to figure out what works for the seizures is the best. Once you figure out the seizure meds you can add the others if you have too. If he can't have a functional life because of the Seizures the ADHD really isn't that important. Thats just my opinion and i never took chemistry. So That maybe something to ask the doctors.

On another note one of the best things my mother did was keep a journal of everything involving my meds and seizures. So for that note you rock. Keep up what your doing eventually things will work them selves out.

Re: Effects of Medications

  Marissa,

From talking with your family in the past and knowing that your family has ADHD and Epilepsy you are trying to control, it seems like it is harder to regulate the medication because of the two combined.  Never hesitate to get many opinions of different doctors. Even though you may have a great doctor, your number one priority is Jameson.

If his medicine isn't regulated yet and it isn't working or you haven't found something that worked, seek  out a second or third opinion.

I am not sure if Jameson is seeing a Neurologist, or an Epileptologist.

  • Keep a seizure journal
  • Everytime a seizure occurs write it down (time, what is happening, how long, response)
  • Write down for a month what Jameson eats, and then each night if he has any seizure affect to those foods

This will help you try and correlate what reacts with Jameson system, and then be able to tell the doctors when they ask.

Enhance the seizure journal more than just recording seizures.

  •  Record food,
  • Record activity each day,
  • Record educational ability

This will allow you to see his progress as time goes on as well as help the doctors.

I am not a doctor, but this will help your doctor, and his therapist when you go to the appointments and they ask you questions about his seizures.

Update us when you get a chance.

Have a great day,

 Epilepsy One
